Informals investeren in groei Drillster

The Saints ontwikkeld beste applicatie voor Burgerparticipatie

To really learn: quit studying and take a test
Taking a test is not just a passive mechanism for assessing how much people know, according to new research. It actually helps people learn, and it works better than a number of other studying techniques. A scientific research done by the University of Purdue (Indianapolis, USA), published online in January 2011 in the journal Science, found that students who read a passage, then took a test asking them to recall what they had read, retained about 50 percent more of the information a week later than students who used two other methods. Several cognitive scientists and education experts said the results were striking.

Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits
Every September, millions of parents try a kind of psychological withcraft to transform their summer kids into fall students. Advice is cheap and all too familiar: clear a quiet work space. Stick a homework schedule. Set goals. Set boundaries. Do not bribe. But is this the best way to study?
Yet there are effective approaches to learning, at least for those who are motivated. In recent years, cognitive scientists have shown that a few simple techniques can reliably improve what matters most: how much a student learns from studying.
The findings can help anyone, from a fourth grader doing long division to a retiree taking on a new language. But they directly contradict much of the common wisdom about good study habits, and they have not caught on.
For instance, instead of sticking to one study location, simply alternating the room where a person studies improves retention. So does studying distinct but related skills or concepts in one sitting, rather than focusing intensely on a single thing.
“We have known these principles for some time, and it’s intriguing that schools don’t pick them up, or that people don’t learn them by trial and error,” said Robert A. Bjork, a psychologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Instead, we walk around with all sorts of unexamined beliefs about what works that are mistaken.”
Take the notion that children have specific learning styles, that some are “visual learners” and others are auditory; some are “left-brain” students, others “right-brain.” In a recent review of the relevant research, published in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest, a team of psychologists found almost zero support for such ideas. “The contrast between the enormous popularity of the learning-styles approach within education and the lack of credible evidence for its utility is, in our opinion, striking and disturbing,” the researchers concluded.
Ditto for teaching styles, researchers say. Some excellent instructors caper in front of the blackboard like summer-theater Falstaffs; others are reserved to the point of shyness. “We have yet to identify the common threads between teachers who create a constructive learning atmosphere,” said Daniel T. Willingham, a psychologist at the University of Virginia and author of the book “Why Don’t Students Like School?”
But individual learning is another matter, and psychologists have discovered that some of the most hallowed advice on study habits is flat wrong. For instance, many study skills courses insist that students find a specific place, a study room or a quiet corner of the library, to take their work. The research finds just the opposite. In one classic 1978 experiment, psychologists found that college students who studied a list of 40 vocabulary words in two different rooms — one windowless and cluttered, the other modern, with a view on a courtyard — did far better on a test than students who studied the words twice, in the same room. Later studies have confirmed the finding, for a variety of topics.
The brain makes subtle associations between what it is studying and the background sensations it has at the time, the authors say, regardless of whether those perceptions are conscious. It colors the terms of the Versailles Treaty with the wasted fluorescent glow of the dorm study room, say; or the elements of the Marshall Plan with the jade-curtain shade of the willow tree in the backyard. Forcing the brain to make multiple associations with the same material may, in effect, give that information more neural scaffolding.
Varying the type of material studied in a single sitting — alternating, for example, among vocabulary, reading and speaking in a new language — seems to leave a deeper impression on the brain than does concentrating on just one skill at a time. Musicians have known this for years, and their practice sessions often include a mix of scales, musical pieces and rhythmic work. Many athletes, too, routinely mix their workouts with strength, speed and skill drills.
The advantages of this approach to studying can be striking, in some topic areas. In a study recently posted online by the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology, Doug Rohrer and Kelli Taylor of the University of South Florida taught a group of fourth graders four equations, each to calculate a different dimension of a prism. Half of the children learned by studying repeated examples of one equation, say, calculating the number of prism faces when given the number of sides at the base, then moving on to the next type of calculation, studying repeated examples of that. The other half studied mixed problem sets, which included examples of all four types of calculations grouped together. Both groups solved sample problems along the way, as they studied.
This new way of thinking has been digitalized in Drillster, the e-memorization tool that is gaining rapidly ground in the international e-learning market. Drillster is a Syllion company.

Decline foreign investment Netherlands
The number of foreign investments in the Netherlands has shown less decrease in The Netherlands than in other European countries. However, there are still worries about the attractiveness of the Netherlands for foreign companies.
Ernst & Young recently presented a survey for which they investigated the decrease of the number of foreign companies starting a business in The Netherlands as well as in the rest of Europe. Although the decline in foreign investments was less in The Netherlands than in other European countries, it is still valid to ask the question: “Are The Netherlands losing on opportunities?”. This question can be answered positively. Ernst & Young came to the conclusion that opportunities are primarily lost for attracting European Headquarters and companies in research and development as well as transport to the Netherlands. The decrease in the Netherlands was 7% in 2010 compared to a European average decline of 11%.

Syllion supports PSMS BV in further expansion
Syllion will support Public Space Management Services BV (PSMS) in their further expansion. Syllion provides management support to further promote the commercial offering of PSMS in both the Netherlands and abroad. PSMS is market leader in the Netherlands for the delivery of public space management applications that are used by municipalities, utility companies and construction companies to manage road works within city boundaries.
PSMS is based in Hilversum, the Netherlands and in the 3 years that they have been developing the space management application, they have built up a dominant position on the Dutch market. The PSMS service has a real-time overview of all road works within city boundaries, something that is not registered in the Netherlands on a national basis. The services that PSMS offer help municipalities in the communication with their contractors but also in the communication to road users and any other stakeholders. The application that PSMS provides, called MOOR, has a dominant position on the Dutch market and will now be further integrated with traffic management systems and public information services of the various municipalities that use MOOR. Also municipalities outside of The Netherlands have shown interest in this innovative tool and Syllion will support PSMS in the further national and international expansion of this interesting managed service.

The private equity market in 2009 and 2010
2009 was a difficult year for Private Equity firms. By every indicator, from investment activity to exit level, and from new fund-raising volumes to fund returns, the Private Equity market approached in 2009 its deep lows. But as the private equity market has entered 2010, activity has revived modestly.
What did we see happening in 2009?
- Private equity’s “golden age” of low interest rates, abundant leverage, mega-deal making and effortless returns is over, and will not soon return.
- Global private equity investments sank to a level not seen since the last downturn. All regions and industry sectors suffered.
- The dynamics underlying the decline differed by region. In North America and Europe, economic uncertainty and frosty debt conditions constrained deal making. In emerging markets, the massive dislocation of value brought about by declining economic growth and tumbling equity markets led to a mismatch of buyer and seller expectations. In both regions, the rapid rebound of equity markets did not give valuation and deal multiples a chance to reset.
- Private equity firms readjusted their investment focus to the opportunities 2009 presented, favouring carve-outs, growth equity, acquisition finance, balance-sheet restructurings and distressed debt investments.
- Fund-raising declined across all major private equity asset classes and was weak in every region.
- Despite their continued commitment to private equity, the “denominator effect” and the paucity of private equity distributions squeezed limited partners’ liquidity and impaired their ability to commit to new funds.
- The downturn forced significant markdowns in portfolio valuations, causing short-term private equity returns to decline by double digits; recent vintages were hit hardest.
- Still, private equity funds continued to outperform all major stock market indexes, helping to shore up limited partners’ portfolios.
- Leading private equity firms that laid the groundwork during the downturn should be positioned well for market conditions in 2010 and beyond.
What will we see in 2010?
But 2010 is the year in which the private equity market is expected to recover slowly from the 2009 disaster state. Deal activity is slowly recovering and the following characteristics are expected to mark the private equity market in 2010:
- Harsh conditions will mark this recovery. Credit markets remain strained; sensitivities about private equity ownership could reduce the availability of target companies; bargains will be hard to find.
- The debt markets’ limited capacity to absorb a growing supply of refinancings may crimp the borrowing needed to finance new private equity deals. The shortfall will begin to show up in 2010.
- Fund-raising will be anemic. Many limited partners are scraping against target allocations, there is a huge overhang of capital commitments already made and limited partners face an ongoing liquidity squeeze.
- Limited partners are becoming more assertive, but the best investors will still be rewarded. Limited partners recognize they don’t want to ruin what historically has been a good partnership.
- Returns on new funds formed and new investments made over the next three to five years will be several percentage points below their historic levels.

Ricoh, Portbase and Numiq start e-invoicing pilot
Ricoh and Portbase start a pilot for e-invoicing in the Dutch sea ports and will use Numiq for the registration of the e-invoicing preference of senders and receivers of the digital invoices. This joint project will save the companies that are active in the Port of Rotterdam millions of euro.
Portbase offers the Port Community System to companies and governments that are active in the port of Rotterdam. E-invoicing is the latest project that is now added the suite of services that the Port Community System offers. Around 1400 national and international companies make use of the Port Community System where over 35 million logistic messages are generated on a yearly basis. Digital invoices will make the system more complete and will result in large cost savings for the many companies that are invoicing port related services products. In order to ensure that senders know in what format their customers can and want to receive their e-invoices, Ricoh and Portbase will use Numiq. Friso de Jong of Numiq explained in "BNR in Business" how the e-invoicing market is developing and what Numiq contributes in this market. A reason why many companies are still not using electronic invoicing is that they do not know how their counter part can or want to receive the e-invoice. Numiq provides the directory service where receivers and senders can express their preferences which the Numiq service will then match.

The Saints introduceert Stretchpad voor iPad tijdschrijften

Syllion invests in NUMIQ
Syllion BV, IMNederland and Factuurwijzer recently launched a new business activity: Numiq. Numiq provides a solution for companies that send and receive electronic invoices. Electronic invoices can be sent and received in a large variety of technical formats and senders of these digital invoices do not always know in what format companies would like to receive their e-invoices. Numiq provides the dictionary in which this information is stored.
The platform of Numiq was developed in 2009 and is now ready for commercial use. The first customers, among which are Ricoh and Portbase (Port of Rotterdam). Companies can register their preferences for the sending and receiving of e-invoices free of charge on numiq.nl and can then inform their suppliers of their preferences. Customers automatically receive a notification when their preferences in their Numiq profile are matched against those of a customer or supplier.
Numiq makes e-invoicing easier and is thus an important accelerator for the electronic invoicing industry. Numiq can be seen as the social network for online preferences of electronic invoicing preferences. The worldwide use of “universal addresses” for matching of preferences between receivers and senders of digital invoices will promote the development of the penetration of e-invoicing in national and international invoicing.

Younger people more willing to pay for online content
Market research company Nielsen recently investigated the willingness of people to pay for online content. The younger generation is more willing to pay for online content than the elder generation. Movies, games and music are the products that people are most wiling to pay for.
More than 27.000 people in 52 countries participated in the survey that was conducted by Nielsen. 60 Percent of the people that are younger than 20 years consider to pay for online movies and games. Up to 70% of this group is even willing to pay for online music.
This percentage is considerably lower among people of a higher age. People of over 65 years old are seldom willing to pay for online services. Nielsen stated that this conclusion may be surprising as the younger generation normally knows where movies and games can be downloaded for free. But Nielsen thinks that it is also the generation that has grown up with Internet: no difference is experienced in the various ways of watching a movie or playing a game. So having to pay for the experience, independent of the channel, is something that younger people are familiar with.
